Crowdfunding platform Indiegogo closed a $15 million Series A round led by Insight Venture Partners with participation from Khosla Ventures and existing investors Metamorphic Ventures, ffVenture Capital, MHS Capital, and Zynga Inc. co-founder Steve Schoettler.

Co-founder Slava Rubin said the funding will be used primarily to improve the user experience by making campaigns easier to launch, discover, promote and track.

“Since we launched Indiegogo in 2008, we’ve been focused on democratizing fundraising, and creating a platform that allows anybody to raise money for anything, from anywhere,” Rubin said. He added that it currently is being used by creative, entrepreneurial and cause campaigners in nearly 200 countries.

Indiegogo began with the help of a $1.5 million seed round. It distinguishes itself from Kickstarter and other competitors by accepting all kinds of endeavors seeking to raise money, not just those with a clearly defined end goal.
