Sunnyvale, Calif. – Canesta, a developer of
3D image sensors that late last year raised $16 million in funding, said it has
signed a deal to be acquired by technology giant Microsoft (NASD: MSFT).

Financial terms of
the deal, expected to be completed by year’s end, were not disclosed.

Canesta’s
technology is used to create natural user interfaces (NUI), which enable
consumer electronic devices to react to the actions or motions of their users
(such as controlling a TV with hand gestures alone).

"There is little
question that within the next decade we will see natural user interfaces become
common for input across all devices," said Jim Spare, Canesta’s president
and CEO.

"With Microsoft’s breadth of scope… we are confident that our
technology will see wide adoption across many applications."
