TiVo unveiled its latest home unit, the Premiere Elite set-top box, which includes four digital tuners and three hours of high-definition storage in one digital video recorder. This makes it possible for a household to record four different programs at the same time, all while watching a fifth one that was previously recorded.
The newest TiVo (pictured) costs $500 and works only with digital cable, high-definition digital cable and Verizon FiOS; it has CableCARD, cable coax and Ethernet connections. Built into the unit is a two-terabyte hard drive, THX certification for high quality audio, and integration with Web-based entertainment services like Netflix, Pandora, Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant Video, YouTube and others.
What the TiVo Premiere Elite doesn’t have is permission from the FCC to go on sale. The unit does not have an analog tuner, as has been required by law since 2007, so TiVo is seeking a waiver from that requirement in time to go on sale later this year.
The unit can share content with other TiVo boxes in the same home and works with most home automation controllers, including Crestron, Control4, and RTI. It has HDMI, component video, composite video, optical audio and analog audio outputs, as well as 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p video output modes.
