EFF Seeks Attorneys to Aid 50,000 File-Sharing Defendants

0

San Francisco – The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), a
digital civil liberties group, has put out a call for U.S.-licensed attorneys
to help it defend the targets of an expected 50,000 lawsuits related to movie
downloading. A group of independent film producers, as well as the producers of
Oscar-winning "The Hurt Locker," have hired U.S. Copyright Group to
sue and seek monetary settlements from people who are suspected to have
downloaded the films via BitTorrent. The EFF is seeking attorneys to advise the
targets of these lawsuits, and potentially file motions to quash subpoenas
seeking their identities from their Internet service providers.

Report: Media Tablet Shipments to Hit 46 Million by 2014

0

Framingham,
Mass. –
An estimated 7.6 million media
tablet computers are expected to ship this year, a number expected to grow to
more than 46 million units by 2014, according to a report from market research
firm IDC.

The numbers correspond to a compound annual growth rate of 57.4% for
the media tablet market.

The firm differentiates a "media tablet"
from a "tablet computer" by noting that a media tablet features a
7-inch to 12-inch display and no hardware keyboard.

"IDC expects consumer
demand for media tablets to be strongly driven by the number and variety of
compatible third-party apps for content and services," said IDC’s Susan
Kevorkian.

"The availability of apps unique to media tablets and that
differentiate the experience of using one compared with a PC or smartphone will
be crucial for driving consumer demand.

"As the category matures and more media
tablet-optimized apps become available, IDC expects that media tablets will
evolve beyond nice-to-have devices and become necessities for many
consumers."

Google Debuts Google TV Platform

0

San Francisco
– Google (NASD:  GOOG) on Thursday introduced its Google TV platform, which it says will
"add the power of the Web to the television viewing experience," and
announced support from partners including Intel (NASD:  INTC), Sony (NYSE:  SNE), Logitech (NASD:  LOGI), Best Buy (NYSE:  BBY), DISH
Network (NASD:  DISH) and Adobe (NASD:  ADBE). The Android-based platform runs Google’s Chrome browser, and
lets users access listings for TV content alongside DVR and Web video content —
including Adobe Flash-based video — and streaming content from services like
Netflix and Amazon Video On Demand.

Google TV viewers will also be able to run
apps from the Android Market.

An Intel chip will power devices from Sony and
Logitech, expected to sell later this year from retailers including Best Buy,
that will run Google TV.

Google noted that some features of the service will
only be available with advanced integration from satellite TV provider DISH
Network, with which it collaborated on field testing Google TV.
