Palo Alto, Calif. – Facebook on Wednesday launched
"Sponsored Stories," a new advertising format that culls mentions of
brands in users’ profiles, and repurposes them as Facebook ads. The ads could
comprise a user’s "Like" of a certain brand, or a post on the brand’s
Page, a check-in at a particular business, or actions within custom
applications.

Currently, Facebook provides no way for users to opt out of their
posts being used for advertising purposes.

The company said Sponsored Stories
ads will only be visible to friends of the user who originally published the
brand-related post.

The feature was launched yesterday for "premium"
Facebook advertisers.
