Reston, Va. – AppTap, the Reston, Va.-based developer of a contextual app recommendations platform and ad network, said on Thursday it has raised $4 million in a new round of funding, led by Syncom Venture Partners.

Previous backer New Atlantic Ventures also participated in the round, which the company will use to enhance its app recommendations service for consumers, which serves more than 150 million recommendations a month across a network of media properties and wireless carriers.

The company, founded by Electronic Arts and AOL veteran Matt Callaway, also plans to broaden its app advertising capabilities for developers and expand its distribution partnerships.

The service delivers contextually relevant app recommendations to users based on the articles they are reading and topics they are searching for. It also lets users find and share apps with friends on Facebook and Twitter.

“The rising flood of apps is drowning out talented app developers and leaving consumers struggling to find apps relevant to their interests,” said chief executive officer Callaway. “App discovery that is targeted and widely available is fundamental to a flourishing app ecosystem.”
