DirecTV subscribers are entering the weekend without Comedy Central or Nickelodeon, and Dish Network subscribers are likely to miss the season debut of AMC’s Breaking Bad, as the channels and pay TV trample on paying customers during their negotiations. But as a new study indicates, one response from viewers is to choose none of the above.

Nielsen reports that a growing number of Netflix subscribers are using it to watch TV shows in preference to movies, with 19 percent of the respondents prefer to use the service for TV style programming, an increase of eight percent compared to 2011. (See chart, below.)

Subscribers who mainly use Netflix to stream movies slipped from 53 percent in 2011 to 47 percent in 2012. Those who said they watch both types of content equally have stayed pretty much the same, down just 1 percent to 35 percent in 2012.

Nielsen forecasts that these trend lines will contine as Netflix increases its catalog of content not available elsewhere. It points to the success of Lillehammer, which stars Steven Van Zandt, the upcoming Orange is the New Black, from Weeds showrunner Jenji Kohan, and the rebirth of Arrested Development.
